The post-partum depression (PPD), also known as postpartum depression, is a form of clinical depression, which can affect women and less frequently men, after childbirth. Studies report prevalence rates for women from 5% to 25%, but methodological differences between studies make the actual prevalence is unclear. For men, especially for new fathers, the prevalence of postpartum depression has been estimated between 1.2% and 25.5%. Postpartum depression occurs in women after they have children, usually during the first month, and can last up to several months or even years. Symptoms include sadness, fatigue, sleep and changes in eating habits, decreased libido, crying spells, anxiety and irritability. Although several risk factors have been identified, the causes of PPD are not well understood. Most women recover with treatment consists of a support group or counseling.

  • Sadness
  • Hopelessness
  • Low self-esteem
  • Guilt
  • A feeling of being overwhelmed
  • Sleep and eating disturbances
  • Inability to be comforted
  • Exhaustion
  • Emptiness
  • Anhedonia
  • Social withdrawal
  • Low or no energy
  • Becoming easily frustrated
